The 1,000 Islands – Renewable Energy for Electrification Programme Phase 2 (REEP2) is joint-project implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on behalf of The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and Directorate General of New Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (DG NREEC).

The project aims to improve institutional, regulatory, and technical conditions at national and regional level for achieving Indonesia policy target of 23 % of renewable energy in the energy mix in 2025. The project is working closely with its project partners including the Directorate General of Electricity (DGE) and PT PLN (Persero).

The projective objective is to be achieved through three areas of intervention, clustered in three components:

  • Regulatory Framework aims to improve the institutional capacities and human resources of the National Directorate-General for Electricity (DJK) and the National Directorate-General for New and Renewable Energies and Energy Integration (EBTKE) to regulate the RE sector.
  • Power System & Project Engineering aims to improve the capacities of the national electricity supply company PLN at national and regional level in the three target regions (Sulawesi, Bangka-Belitung, and NTT). To this end, the technical competencies of the employees in the areas of RE-optimized grid expansion planning (including identification of grid integration potential) and management of a selected large power grid with a high proportion of volatile RE (Sulawesi) will be strengthened.
  • Private Sector Support & Innovation aims to strengthen the capacities of medium-sized enterprises to demonstrate innovative technologies and business models for load shifting or diesel savings, especially in smaller island grids, in order to value the potential of the private sector in achieving the RE expansion target.
